“The new HBO porn dram series The Deuce,” stars James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhaal in stellar roles. Franco plays dual parts as twins Martino and Frankie Martino, while Gyllenhaal plays a prostitute who aspires to direct adult films.
Created by George Pelecanos and David Simon, who worked together on the acclaimed two HBO series “Treme” and “The Wire,” the new show celebrated its premiere at SVA Theater on 23d Street Thursday evening and screened the pilot to a packed audience.
Afterwards guests drifted to Second at the Event Hotel for the after party.

“THE DEUCE” begins in 1971 and follows the story of the legalization and subsequent rise of the porn industry in New York’s Times Square through the mid-1980s, exploring the nascent moments of what would become the billion-dollar American sex industry.
George Pelecanos, David Simon, James Franco and Nina K. Noble executive produced. Gyllenhaal is also a producer on the show.
The eight-episode season debuts Sunday, September 10 (9-10:30 p.m.)
Stay tuned in the next couple of days for my red carpet interviews with George Pelecanos, David Simon and James Franco, who told me about the challenges of playing dual roles along with how the series affected his perceptions of porn. I also spoke to sensational newcomers Gary Carr and Jamie Neumann, who bring depth and emotion in their respective roles as a pimp and prostitute.
