Writer/director/star of “Dean” Demetri Martin and co-star Academy-Award winner Kevin Kline attended the special screening of “Dean” in New York, Wednesday at the Roxy.
Comedian Demetri Martin’s directorial debut “Dean” is a comedy/drama about a father and son coming dealing with grief in their own ways. Dean (Martin) and his father Robert (Kline) are mourning the death of Dean’s mother, who died nearly a year earlier. Both seem stuck; Martin is an illustrator who keeps missing his deadlines and Robert finds himself lost in his now too-big house. Dean takes off to Los Angeles for a short escape while Robert decides to sell the family home.

This gentle comedy offers plenty of laughs but also through its storyline provides a meditation on grief and loss and how mourning is complicated and often takes longer than people realize. Also the film points out that everyone deals and recovers from personal tragedy in their own way and that there should be no judgment on how people process grief.
Gillian Jacobs (“Love”) and Mary Steenburgen play appealing women who are potential love interests.
Other celebs who attended the N.Y. screening included MOLLY RINGWALD, F. MURRAY ABRAHAM (Homeland), MICHAEL XAVIER (Sunset Boulevard on Broadway), BRYAN TERRELL CLARK (Hamilton on Broadway), CHRISTIANE SEIDEL (Boardwalk Empire), KRYSTAL JOY BROWN, Vogue’s SALLY SINGER, SETH HERZOG (The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon), ALEX LUNDQVIST, WILL COTTON, GENEVIEVE BARKER, DREW NIEPORENT, KELLY BENSIMON, JAZMIN GRIMALDI, IAN MELLENCAMP, ZEKE THOMAS, TARA WESTWOOD, MERY RACAUCHI, WILL KOPELMAN and ANTIONE VERGLAS.
