Sometimes, truth is stranger than fiction. In this film based on a true story, a gay porn filmmaker named Stephen (played by Christian Slater) specializes in filming teenage boys. But when one of his stars becomes too much of a cash cow, a rival (James Franco) and his lover (Keegan Allen) decide to murder Stephen in order to make money from the star themselves. Molly Ringwald and Alicia Silverstone also have small roles in the film.

I was surprised to see Christian Slater in a role like this, but that may be exactly why he chose to do it. Playing a man pining after teenage boys is certainly a departure for him.

The film, titled “King Cobra” (named after Stephen’s gay porn company, Cobra Video), contains a bit of fairly explicit sex, but nothing full frontal. Newcomer Garrett Clayton, who will play Link in the upcoming “Hairspray Live!” is the teen star who is at the center of the drama.

“King Cobra,” written and directed by Justin Kelly, opens in theaters and digital platforms today, Oct. 21, 2016.
