Blake Lively has a new movie coming up called “The Shallows.” It looks like “Jaws” for a new generation!
In the taut thriller, Blake Lively plays Nancy, a woman who’s surfing alone on a secluded beach. Out of the blue, she’s attacked by a great white shark and stranded on a rock just a short distance from shore.
Though Nancy is only 200 yards from her survival, getting there proves the ultimate contest of wills. What do you think? Are you betting on Blake Lively or the shark?
“The Shallows” is directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, who’s known for other thrillers such as “Non-Stop,” “Run All Night,” and “Orphan.” I’m geeked about seeing Blake Lively in this movie where she and the shark are basically the stars. Óscar Jaenada and Sedona Legge also have roles, but let’s get real. This is Blake Lively’s movie.
The Shallows Starring Blake Lively – Interesting Backstory
It’s written by Anthony Jaswinski, who also has a list of thrillers to his writing credit, including “Backwoods,” “Kristy” and “Satanic.”
Louis Leterrier was originally set to direct, but exited the film due to creative differences and a reduction of the previously reported budget. Always good when a film starts out plagued with issues.
And speaking of which, “The Shallows” – originally titled “In the Deep” – was featured in the 2014 Blacklist, a list of the “most liked” unmade scripts of the year. I’m glad it’s finally being made. And as a vehicle for Blake Lively, who I love.
It’s produced by Lynn Harris and Matti Leshem, and executive produced by Doug Merrifield and Jaume Collet-Serra. The film is not yet rated by the Motion Picture Association of America. I’m guessing it’ll grab a PG-13 rating, but might score an R rating, if there’s intense peril. (Though let’s face it, there’s a lot of horror movies that are rated PG-13 these days.)
The movie hits theaters June 24, 2016.
