Bill Murray and Groundhog Day
If you’re like me, Groundhog Day means, well, watching Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell in the movie, “Groundhog Day” – one of my favorite movies of all time!
Punxsutawney Phil
Of course, the actual Groundhog Day – the day we anxiously wait for a groundhog to pop his little head out of the ground on February 2nd to predict the weather – began in the United States among the Pennsylvania Dutch communities in the mid 19th century.
Then in 1887, the editor of the Punxsutawney Spirit, a newspaper in the town of the same name, started promoting the holiday with their own groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, as the official meteorologist of the day.

For as the sun shines on Candlemas Day,
So far will the snow swirl until May.
For as the snow blows on Candlemas Day,
So far will the sun shine before May.
Instagram Fan Art of Bill Murray
In case you think that Punxsutawney Phil is the only groundhog of fame, consider these other furry celebrities: Chuckles in Manchester, Connecticut; Woody in Howell, Michigan; General Beauregard Lee in Lilburn, Georgia; and Fred in Val d’Espoir, Quebec.
“You want a prediction about the weather? You’re asking the wrong Phil. I’ll give you a weather prediction: It’s gonna be cold, it’s gonna be gray, and it’s gonna last you for the rest of your life!” – Bill Murray as Phil Connors in the 1993 movie, Groundhog Day.
