HBO announced at Comic-Con today that a variety of actors will be joining the already large cast of “Game of Thrones” for Season 5.
Most notable are Alexander Sidding, Tony Award winner Jonathan Pryce, and Oscar nominated Keisha Castle-Hughes.
Siddig has been cast as Doran Martell, the ruling lord of Dorne and older brother to the recently deceased Prince Oberyn Martell. Opposite of his brother Oberyn, Doran is even-tempered, but how will he react to his brother’s gruesome death?
Best known as Paikea in “Whale Rider,” Keisha Castle-Hughes will play Obara Sand, Oberyn’s eldest bastard daughter whose mother was a peasant girl who caught Oberyn’s eye. Castle-Hughes was the youngest actress to be nominated for the Best Actress award and confessed in an interview that she didn’t know how to swim when she got the role in “Whale Rider.” Will Obara seek revenge for her father’s death?
Both an accomplished actor on stage and screen, Jonathan Pryce joins the elite cast as the High Sparrow. A devout and pious man, the High Sparrow sounds like Westeros’ version of our current Pope Francis as he tends to the needs of those forgotten by rest of the world – the poor and downtrodden.
Additional new cast members announced are:
Toby Sebastian as Trystane Martell, Prince Doran’s son and heir to Dorne. His father betrothed him to Myrcella Baratheon as part of the alliance offered by Tywin Lannister, then Hand of the King.
Nell Tiger Free as Myrcella Baratheon, the eldest child of Cersei and Jaime (who is her father and uncle). While she has been betrothed to Trystane for awhile, the agreement has become a bit tenuous with Oberyn’s death and Cersei’s hand in it.
DeObia Oparei as Areo Hotah, a captain serving in Doran Martell’s palace guard (but can he rock the “Game of Thrones” theme song like this Palace Guard did?).
Enzo Cilenti as Yezzan, a wealthy slave trader before Daenerys Targaryen outlawed the slave trade.
Playing Oberyn’s other bastard daughters are Jessica Henwick and Rosabell Laurenti Sellers. Henwick was cast as Nymeria (“Nym”) Sand, the second eldest who comes with her own very special set of skills (can we not cast Liam Neeson already?!). Not only did her mother bring her up to be cultured and graceful, she’s also deadly with a whip. Sellers plays Tyene Sand, whose mother is Ellaria Sand, his most recent and last lover (played by “Torchwood’s” Indira Varma).
Look for the fifth season of “Game of Thrones” to premiere sometime in 2015.
