The nominations for the British Academy of Film Awards were announced yesterday in London by Brit actors Luke Evans and Helen McCory, who read off the names of mostly American nominees.
In the all-important category of best picture, “Gravity” led the pack with 11 BAFTA nominations. Sandra Bullock, who stars as a woman adrift in space, also received a best actress nod, and Alfonso Cuarón was nominated for best director. The other nominations were for screenplay, editing, production design, cinematography, original music, sound and special visual effects,
The other best picture nominees are David O. Russell’s “American Hustle” (10 nominations), Steve McQueen’s “12 Years a Slave” (also 10 nominations); Paul Greengrass’s “Captain Phillips” (9 nominations); and “Saving Mr. Banks” (5 nominations).
There are no big surprises in the best actor category except that for the first time, we’re seeing Christian Bale’s name pop up for “American Hustle”. Leonardo DiCaprio is also nominated for “The Wolf of Wall Street,” which is unexpected.
The other nominees in this category are the usual suspects: Bruce Dern (“Nebraska”); Chiwetel Ejiofor (“12 Years a Slave”); and Tom Hanks (“Captain Phillips”). Left off this list is Robert Redford, who was just named best actor by the New York Film Critics Circle and who gave a phenomenal speech on Monday at their gala. Another name that has disappeared is Oscar Isaac, who stars in the Coen Brothers’ 1960’s folk story “Inside Llewyn Davis.”
Also for the first time, we’re hearing Amy Adams as a best actress possibility (“American Hustle). Other nominees besides Bullock are Cate Blanchett (“Blue Jasmine”), Emma Thompson (“Saving Mr. Banks”) and Judi Dench (“Philomena”). My money is still on Blanchett.
It was a good day for first-time actor Barkhad Abdi, who stars as a Somalia pirate in “Captain Phillips,” and who was so shy at the New York Film Festival, where the film was first unveiled, that he barely spoke. Bradley Cooper’s name has also come up for the first time (“American Hustle”). I am also happy to see Daniel Bruhl receive a well-earned nomination for his terrific performance as Formula One champion Niki Lauda in Ron Howard’s “ Rush.” Matt Damon has also been recognized for “Behind the Candelabra.” But the frontrunner is Michael Fassbender for “12 Years a Slave.”
Another pleasant surprise is a best supporting nomination for Oprah Winfrey for “Lee Daniels’ The Butler.” Other nominees are Jennifer Lawrence (“American Hustle”), Julia Roberts (“August: Osage County”), Lupita Nyong’o (“12 Years a Slave”) and Sally Hawkins (“Blue Jasmine”).
There are only three movies in the animation category: “Despicable Me 2,” “Frozen” and “Monsters University.”
And in the documentary category, Alex Gibney has been nominated twice, for “The Armstrong Lie” and “We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks.” The WikiLeaks documentary has been blasted by Julian Assange, but has gotten love with nominations from the Producers Guild and the Writers Guild. Other Bafta nominees for best documentary are “Blackfish” (Gabriela Cowperthwaite), “Tim’s Vermeer” (Teller, Penn Jillette, Farley Ziegler) and “The Act of Killing” (Joshua Oppenheimer).
The BAFTA ceremony will be hosted by the witty Stephen Fry and will be broadcast on BBC One and BBC One HD, preceded by a red carpet show on BBC Three. The ceremony is also broadcast in all major territories around the world. This used to be a fairly low-key affair but gets bigger and more Americanized every year. BAFTA New York usually hosts a viewing party every year for its members and guests.
