Season three of “The X Factor” premiered tonight, and a few interesting singers blew the audience and judges away.
I think what we’ll do with the talent competitions is just post the most interesting videos – which could include either really, really great singers or really, really awful singers. But I think a lot of people are just tired of sitting through awful auditions, so we’ll probably keep those to a minimum.
Here are the ones that caught my attention in tonight’s season three premiere of “The X Factor,” with Demi Lovato, Kelly Rowland, Paulina Rubio and stalwart Simon Cowell at the judge’s table.
Carlito Olivero, a coffee shop worker who wants to be a “Latino Chris Brown,” and sailed through with a unanimous yes after singing “Stay” by Rihanna. Simon said he “likes the voice and the charisma.”
Lillie McCloud, a 54-year-old singer who sang “Alabaster Box.” She reminds me of Gladys Knight, and the judges loved her.
Alex and Sierra, indie rockers who sang “Toxic.” Sierra started crying part-way through the song, because I think she was just overwhelmed by everything. The judges loved them, and Demi said this: “Not only are you talented, but you’re so down to earth. You’re like freaking out in the middle of the lines. You’re so excited and cute together. There’s magic.”
Simon added, “You’re both cool and you’re quirky. It was an incredible version of the song.”
Rion Paige, a 13-year-old who sang Carrie Underwood’s “Blown Away.” Rion has a condition that affects her joints, and she’s also blind in one eye. The audience and judges were on their feet, including Simon, who said, “I think you’re literally extraordinary. I really do. I’m gonna remember this audition for a long, long time. In every single way, Rion, you are a beautiful person.”
And Demi said this: “I cannot believe the struggles you’ve had and how positive you are. I think everybody in this room can learn something from you today.”
Any standouts for you in tonight’s episode of “The X Factor”?
