“The Voice” is back! Already had some great auditions from tonight’s season five premiere, and the gang is back together. That would be judges Blake Shelton, Christina Aguilera, CeeLo Green and Adam Levine.
It’s always interesting when contestants have to choose which judge to work with. An embarrassment of riches!
Here are the auditions from tonight’s show:
Kat Robichaud, “I Got the Music in Me” (CeeLo Green). “Your name is raspy mcrasperson,” said Adam. ““You should come on over to Team Blake and teach me about David Bowie,” said Blake.
Caroline Pennell, 17 (CeeLo Green). I love that these are “blind” auditions, because looking at this girl, you’d never guess she has an amazing voice. She’s the penultimate “girl next door,” but sounds like Florence and the Machine. Blake said he wants her to start believing in herself. “YOU are a baddass vocalist.” But she chose CeeLo, because “he’ll take good care of me, as a person.”
Donna Allen, 40+, “You Are So Beautiful” (Adam Levine). She has some creds; she was part of Miami Sound Machine for seven years. “That voice is like the heavens opening up,” said Christina. Adam said, “I’m gonna be super bummed if you don’t pick me.” Seriously, I’m surprised she went with Adam over Christina, but we’ll see where it goes!

Jake Worthington, 17, “Keep Your Hands To Yourself” (No one!). Amazing voice! And such a great down home kind of guy. He makes me smile. What?! No one turned around? But he’s such a good sport and said he’s just happy to be there and meet the judges.
Matthew Schuler, 20, “Cough Syrup” (Christina Aguilera). All four judges turned around immediately. They know star power when they see it. This guy just seems so full of joy when he sings. CeeLo said it best: “Your voice is beautiful … I can help you own yourself.” Adam said, “I know for a fact we can win this together.” But he chooses Christina, which makes her break into a little song about it.
Nick Hawk, 26, Dallas, TX, “Hit ‘Em Up Style (Oops)” (Adam Levine). He teaches hip-hop (including twerking!), and moved back home to help out his family financially. This guy has so much energy! “What’s goin’ on, handsome?” he asks Adam. “I don’t know if I’ll be able to focus because you’re so good looking.” Adam said flattery will get him everywhere, and called him “phenomenal.” CeeLo called him “a natural born star.”

Matthew Brea, 15, Atlanta, GA, “I Want You Back” (No one). His brother passed away when he was very young, but he says he’s with him for every performance. I can’t believe no one turned around for him, but Adam made him promise to come back, and CeeLo came backstage to offer more encouragement. Yeah, I was hoping he would change his mind and put him on his team.
Shelbie Z., 21, Jasper, IL, “Here For the Party” (Blake Shelton). “It’s my time to get out there and show that I’m me and I love myself, no matter what size I am,” she said. Love her confidence and stage presence. Her voice reminds me of Wynnona Judd.

Josh Logan, 33, Manchester, NH, “Too Close” (Christina Aguilera). He’s a professional musician and sings six nights a week, three sets each night. Phew. Christina, Adam and Blake turned around. Blake said, “I have a man-crush on you.” To which Josh replied, “I’m not sure how to take that, but thank you!”

Delvin Choice, 24, Greenville, SC, “Closer” (No one). He’s a Starbucks worker with a wild mohawk who’s known as “The Singing Barista.” While no one chose him, he said he’ll keep working and be back.
James Wolpert, 22, Pittsburgh, PA, “Love Interruption” (Adam Levine). He attended Carnegie Mellon and dropped out to pursue music. “You’re the complete vocalist,” said Blake, who said he expected to see a wild rocker instead of an Apple store employee.
