Despicable Me 2, Fast 6 Take Global Box Office

Fast 6 Minions

One thing is clear. People love those minions! According to BoxOffice.com, “Despicable Me 2” will overtake “Fast & Furious 6” at the global box office. People love fast cars, too. Maybe they should meld these two movies together for an upcoming sequel. They could call it “Fast & Furious Minions.” Minions in fast cars. Wheee!

“Fast 6” and “Despicable Me 2” trail only “Iron Man 3” as 2013’s most successful films to date at the global box office. Both films are from Universal, helping to launch the studio to their biggest overseas numbers ever.

“A strong $64.8 million run in China helped ‘Fast 6’ cross the $500 million overseas mark, a crucial component in its current $547 million overseas total,” notes Daniel Loria over at BoxOffice.com. “‘Fast 6’ finished the weekend with a $785.4 million global total.”

“The Minions are not far behind,” he writes. “Universal’s animated sequel reached a $435.2 million total over the weekend and is in striking distance of ‘Fast 6’s’ worldwide cume with a $781.2 million global total. Unlike ‘Fast 6,’ ‘Despicable Me 2’ will have to finish its overseas run without a release in China.”

“Despicable Me 2” opened in Russia on Friday, Aug. 16, with $12.2 million. That’s the second biggest opening for a Universal release in that market, behind “Fast 6.”

“Despicable Me 2” will open in nine more territories in the coming months, including South Korea (Sept. 12), Japan (Sept. 21) and Italy (Oct. 10). We’re looking at a global cumulative above $800 million for those adorable minions.
