Pop Secret App

Pop SecretI have a confession to make. I’m terrible at making microwave popcorn. There, I’ve said it.

Even though I follow the instructions to the letter, set the timer for the exact amount of time, listen and wait – as the instructions say – for one to two seconds in between pops, it still always ends up burnt.

Seriously. I’m popcorn-challenged. It’s ridiculous. Especially for someone who writes about movies and eats a lot of popcorn.

But if, like me, you suffer from the same tragic flaw, there’s an app for that called “PERFECT POP,” a.k.a. Perfect Popcorn by Diamond Foods, the company behind Pop Secret (@popsecret on Twitter).

This app is the best thing ever. Here’s how it works:

  • Download the app for free on the App Store* by searching for “Perfect Pop” or via the link at
  • Open the app on your device and choose either the “regular bag” or “snack size bag” setting, depending on the type of popcorn you have.
  • Place your device near the microwave (but not on or in).
  • Set the microwave timer per the popcorn’s instructions.
  • When the microwave starts, press “Start” on the app.
  • The app “listens” to the pops and lets you know the exact moment when your popcorn is perfect. As in, not burnt, but perfect.
  • Watch the app. There’s a little piece of popcorn with a face that gets hotter and hotter until he’s red-hot and sweating and dancing and bam! He pops and your popcorn is done! And it truly is perfect. It’s amazingly perfect. Not a burned kernel in site, and every kernel popped (see happy kernel of popcorn, below; watching the app is as much fun as eating the popcorn).

Pop Secret AppAs with anything involving microwaves or cooking or hot foods (don’t forget – that popcorn will be steaming hot when you open the bag), don’t let little ones use the app.

Ok, now that we’ve got the burned popcorn issue solved, what to watch with your perfectly-popped popcorn? Pretty much any genre will do, and there’s plenty of options for family, friends and date nights:

  • Romantic comedies for a fun Girls Movie Night
  • Sports dramas for a fun Guys Movie Night
  • Cute comedies the whole family will enjoy
  • Tween movies for an epic sleepover
  • Romantic dramas for a sweet date night
  • Foreign movies for smart adults
  • Documentaries for all ages

  1. Too many times to count- although, I’ve never been one of those people who burn it at work and make everyone else smell it! 🙂

    chambanachik at gmail dot com

  2. just about every time my girls ask me to make them popcorn I have burned it 🙁 I am terrible at watching it.

  3. What I do so that I do not burn the popcorn is put in a glass of water to microwave for about 5-10 seconds and then take that out and pop the popcorn per directions and usually this works and most every kernel pops.

  4. I’ve burnt about 2 bags of popcorn in one day. To top it off only 1/3 of it popped completely! It was so frustrating because I automatically, put the setting on the “popcorn” setting on the microwave. Even after the first bag burned, I put the 2nd bag on 3 minutes…………still burned, and this time 1/2 of it popped completely. -_-

  5. I burn bags of popcorn in the microwave every once in a while, but I don’t have an Epic story. I know they banned popcorn from my past workplace due to the risk of fire alarms being triggered. I usually just end up with a half smoldering yucky tasty bag of popcorn when I burn popcorn at home.

  6. I’ve burned popcorn too many times to count. I hate the smell of the burned popcorn. What a really neat app. I’ll have to give this a try.

    • hahahah omg I burnt a bag of popcorn once so bad that the micro turned black inside and my house was ingolfed in smoke and took weeks for the smell to air out ..

  7. Oh, more than once I have burned a bag of pop corn in the microwave. It’s easy to do if you don’t get the setting right or walk away from it 🙂

  8. I popped in a bag of popcorn in the micro once and the baby was crying and I ended up forgetting about the popcorn bag without me knowing I had put it to 30.00 minutes instead of 3 minutes and I started smelling burnt and then I went to the kitchen and saw a lot of black smoke.. I got so scared… I turned off the micro and I was coughing .. it was bad.. the whole house was engulfed in black smoke.. took weeks for the smell to go away.. only the popcorn inside the bag was burnt.. nothing caught on fire and thank god.. :0 my microwave is white inside and it was a horrible blackish brown with a horrible burn smell that lasted for months…. I tried cleaning the micro but the blackness never faded.. the micro is now black inside . 🙁 I also had to open the door and windows to air out the house cause me and kids were choking on the smoke .. not cool 🙁

  9. Yes, I have burned popcorn before I think the worst time was when using the new orville bags and it didn’t even pop open and everything burned

    tbarrettno1 at gmail dot com

  10. Ugh Burnt popcorn, how the smell seems to linger for days in your house. I manage to burn popcorn at least once a month. LOL

  11. Yes I have but still maintain the microwave must be breaking down because it is at different times and some bits not popped and some burned! Kids say house stunk for hours. Lovely.
    tvollowitz at aol dot com

  12. I’ve burned popcorn before and when the hubby walked into the house he asked if a bug had flown into the lamp!

  13. has’nt every one at one time or another? definatly have been called away an had to throw it away an start anew

  14. I am super vigilant when it comes to popping because I have smelled that burnt smell too many times and it is sickening!

  15. Yes, I have burned popcorn. Mainly, because it was a different brand than I normally make that needed less time or a different wattage microwave oven was used.

  16. Oh yes I burned a bag of popcorn where I volunteer.
A lot of open space – nasty smell for quite awhile.
    Thank you.

barbara dot montyj at gmail dot com

  17. Yup, I’ve burned microwave popcorn countless times. I burned some in my dorm room in college and set off the smoke alarms! Oops!

  18. Oh, I have burnt more than my fair share of popcorn!! And although I didn’t burn it, the first time I used an airpopper it was seriously right out of a sitcom. I way overestimated the amount of seeds to pop and kept grabbing anything (anything!!) I could to catch the popcorn that would just not stop. By the end I had two mixing bowls, a pot, a coffee mug, and a baking sheet full of popcorn. And let’s not even talk about my floors!

  19. I actually just burned popcorn the other day because my son got me sidetracked! What a stinky smell, it made the smoke alarm go off and my microwave still stinks!!

  20. Have I burnt popcorn? You bet, many times and a couple of times so badly it was not edible buy a balck smking mass.

  21. I’ve burnt popcorn in my home before. However, the most ridiculous burnt popcorn stories happened when I was in college, and insomniac students in my dorm regularly burnt popcorn in the kitchen downstairs AND set off the fire alarm at 3AM!!! Good times!

  22. I can honestly say that I have never burned a bag of popcorn in the microwave, probably because I have never cooked popcorn in the microwave.

  23. Oh yeah, I’ve burned popcorn 🙂 Some of it was still popping, but the rest of it was burning!

The most epic burned popcorn we ever had was when the kids made their first bag. They put the time on too long (no Popcorn button) and we had a house full of smoke! 🙂

  24. I have been one of the co-workers that has burned popcorn at work. I tried covering it up by taking the burnt popcorn outside to throw it in the trash, but too late, the smell escapes as soon as you open the microwave.

  26. Not only have I burned popcorn, but I’ve actually caught one on fire and had to throw the bag in the sink and run water over it. The whole house smelled like burned popcorn for days!!

  27. My microwave has been wonky lately, so I would use this Visa card toward replacing it. Add the PopSecret app and I will never burn popcorn again.

  28. I remember when you use to make popcorn on top of the stove.Occasionally i have scorched some when microwaveing popcorn!

  29. I’ve burned many bags of popcorn! Either the microwave was new and I was trying different settings, or it was a different brand of popcorn and I didn’t read the instructions. Each kind/brand takes a different amount of time to cook.

  30. I have burned popcorn too many times to count, it set off the smoke alarm each and every time. It always got me to think if it’s me or our microwave.

  31. I have memories that are over 2 decades old of the acrid odor of burned microwave popcorn emanating from the break room at work. Back then, we couldn’t even have imagined the existence of an app like this!

  32. At least once!! I was so desperate after I made it, that I had to eat some of it! It was one of those buttery ones! (And my husband had told me, listen to the bag and keep an eye on the microwave! Did I listen, no!)

  33. popcorn burns about every 3rd time…hmmmm you’d think I would learn something. Ok, just grabbed the app – can’t wait to try it!

  34. I haven’t burned any for a long time; though I do stand around nervously for all of the four bags required for our family. The last time I burnt it was just in time for my mother-in-law! The nose wrinkling and unsaid horror was epic.

  35. I’ve burned many a bag of popcorn and a brand new popcorn popper bowl that I cleaned out but it still remains a bit black on the bottom.

  36. Ugh, the smell of burnt popcorn is so awful, and it lingers forever! I have done it and been around plenty of other times it has happened too.

  37. The popcorn button on my microwave goes too long and it always burns if I don’t stand there the whole time, but I don’t have the patience and sometimes forget its there.

  38. Yikes…I was hoping this was a joke. A whole story about burnt popcorn? What’s next-a feature-length movie? Aye Caramba! I wish I had that kind of time on my hands…ANYway–gotta go!

  39. I burnt popcorn once, so badly that I burnt the inside of the microwave–for weeks no matter what I made in the microwave it stank like burnt popcorn. It was bad!

  40. Unfortunately, I have burned a few popcorn bags in the microwave.
As far as my epic story…Well, i worked at a movie theater and was making caramel corn. As I was doing so, I wiped some caramel of the top and accidentally bumped it so that the lid wasn’t lined up with the oil tube. So I popped an entire batch of caramel corn within the confines of the kettle! When I finally was able to dump it, the it came out in one solid chunk 🙁

  41. I’ve only burned microwave popcorn once but it’s totally banned at work because too many people have had major burned popcorn. At least I was at home, not at work, when I burned mine.

  42. I’ve burned popcorn a couple of time and had to open the windows to air the house out. I tend not to walk away from the microwave when I make it now.

  43. When I was a kid, I burned my hand on my mom’s stove-top popcorn maker. I was afraid of getting in trouble, so I claimed it was a snake bite. She saw right through my lie 🙁

  44. I’ve burned popcorn a few times. If it isn’t too burned I’ll eat it anyway! Thanks for the chance to win!
    mrsmchappell at gmail dot com

  45. I burnt it one time, had no idea .. so when I poured it into the bowl I got probably a cup of popcorn and the rest was all charcoal black. The house was filled with smoke. (My first bag of popcorn I had ever made.. I was a teen. Don’t laugh, haha)

  46. I have never burn my pop corn, because i only buy Pop Secret, and burning is never an option. I stand right there until the popping stops and all that butter smell fills the house, then i but another bag in the microwave because the kids just take over the first bag. JANICE DONT BURN HER POP SECERT!

  47. I have burned quite a few bags. The most memorable was on one night when the kids and I were home alone as my husband was out of town on business. We were bored this particular friday night so we searched for and found a movie on demand that the three of us wanted to watch. I popped two bags. The first one I set for 2:10 (directions said 3 mins). There were countless numbers of kernels that didn’t pop. So I let the second bag go for the entire 2:10. The bag had burned so bad I had to quickly put it in a garbage bag and take it to the dumpster in our apartment complex. The smoke from it stained the inside of the microwave and the smell stayed in the entire apartment for three days. Add to that all of the kernels still didn’t pop (a few spilled out as I took the bag out of the microwave) I laugh about it because they were the last two bags I had. I am ashamed because they were actually Pop Secret popcorn. I guess my microwave at the time didn’t want to keep it a secret. Thankfully the smoke alarm didn’t go off.

    • I forgot to mention that I stopped the first bag about 15 seconds early because I was standing near the microwave when I heard the popping begin to slow down.

  48. Yes, I’ve burned a bag of popcorn in the microwave–it set off the smoke detector, scared the cats and woke up the baby!

  49. oh yeah…I’m such an “expert” in burnt pop corns. I just don’t understand why the burnt smell lingers for so long after the burnt! My hubby, and neighbors just know it’s movie night again when they smell the burn! hahaha….

    amy [at] utry [dot] it

  50. Yes, I’ve burned microwave popcorn in the microwave and I was lucky that the bag didn’t catch on fire. Took some heated vanilla-water to get rid of the smell.

  51. I’ve burnt popcorn in the microwave before and hate doing it because it’s a waste.
    lisalmg25 at gmail dot com

  52. I burn popcorn in the microwave all the time! Problem is, you can’t just pick out the burned ones… they all taste burned! YUCK!

  53. I’ve burned popcorn once or twice—
    The smell wasn’t very nice,
But the worst was when it burned,
And I checked the box and learned
There were no more bags for me.
    What an epic tragedy.

  54. One night when I was gone, hubby had to have his ‘corn. Instead of hitting 330 on the timer, he hit 3300….and walked away. By the time he smelled it, it would probably have been easier to just throw out the entire microwave!

  55. I burned popcorn too many times to count. It’s a running joke to open the windows and turn off the smoke detector until I take it out the microwave.

  56. I have burned popcorn as a kid.. the smell is horrific! I dont burn it too bad anymore.. but I have to admit that a few slightly over cooked pieces taste good!!

  57. 1) Have you ever burned a bag of popcorn in the microwave? yep
    2) Got an epic burnt-popcorn story to share? Let’s hear it! Not epic, but embarrassing. I once burned popcorn at work and it made the place stink for days. Shortly after that, they banned microwave popcorn in the office. I was horrified and still wonder if it was my fault.

  58. I put popcorn in for 30 minutes instead of 3 minutes and went downstairs to do some laundry. By the time I smelt it, I didn’t make it upstairs before the smoke alarms started going off. My kitchen reaked for days!

  59. I have burned so many bags of microwave popcorn I cannot even count. The worst was when my mother-in-law had an open house to sell her home and I made popcorn as I had read that you should have your home smell warm and inviting. I burnt the popcorn so badly that you could smell it throughout the house and out the door. She is still mad at me about it 5 years later.

  60. Worst time I burned popcorn was at some people’s house where I was babysitting. The smell was terrible and I felt awful stinking up their house.

  61. I’ve burned popcorn before, and it’s stinky.

The worst was the night before finals during college when someone would burn popcorn and set the fire alarm off. Everyone would have to evacuate, and everyone was grumpy.

  62. Oh, indeed, we’ve burnt popcorn in the microwave…nothing pic, though…just a matter of hitting the “Popcorn” button and thinking that would handle everything. LOL.

  63. I don’t have an epic burnt popcorn story but I have definitely burnt popcorn in the microwave many times.

  64. I had a bunch of friends over to watch a movie and I burned everyones popcorn and had to make it all over again.

  65. I have burned guite a few bags of popcorn. The only really bad thing about it is that it makes the house stink. lol Thank you!

  66. There have been plenty of burnt popcorn bags in our house I think all of us here have done it. The smell is atrocious and seems to hang it the air and in the microwave. LOL

  67. I’ve burned popcorn at work and the smell is horrible and lingers for days. I can’t try the app because I don’t have a smart phone.

    Thanks for the contest.

  68. Oh my, I have burned more bags of popcorn than I would like to think about!! Seriously! I have such a hard time trying to figure out what the popcorn is done, so this app is so awesome

    elizzzzzabeth at yahoo dot com

  69. I guess I’m weird, I like burnt popcorn. But I don’t like it scorched. So the worst time was making it an old microwave at work, it was inedible.
