The Lone Ranger Q&A with Depp, Hammer, Bruckheimer & Verbinski (VIDEO)

It’s always problematic to take a traditional mythical character, especially a Native American, and not perpetuate racist stereotypes. So it will be interesting to see what Johnny Depp does with the role of Tonto in “The Lone Ranger,” co-starring Armie Hammer in the title role.

Depp has been claiming in interviews that he wants to “mess around” with the way people usually think of Tonto, traditionally portrayed as the Lone Ranger’s wooden but brave sidekick.

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Gore Verbinski, the filmmaking team behind the “Pirates of the Caribbean” blockbusters, participated in a Q&A with Depp and Hammer yesterday in Las Vegas, with Ben Lyons moderating.

And here’s a new “Lone Ranger” banner from Disney. What do you think of Depp’s costume? He still looks a little like Captain Sparrow to me.

“The Lone Ranger,” a Disney/Bruckheimer film billed as an action thriller with humor, opens in theaters July 3, 2013.

Looking forward to it?
