Robert Downey Jr. Rocks Lederhosen at the Iron Man 3 Munich Premiere

Gwyneth Paltrow, who plays Pepper Potts in “Iron Man 3,” is the epitome of elegance in a sleek black-and-white dress by Kaufman Franco at the film’s premiere in Munich the other day.

Robert Downey Jr. looks jaunty, and let’s face it, a bit dopey, in German leather britches called lederhosen. It seems the full body armor was not available. He’s also sporting a leather purse thingee around his waist and an ascot, along with a tan blazer and button-down shirt.

No stylist has claimed responsibility, but if he looks a little kitschy, at least we bet the Germans went for this look big time.

In Marvel’s “Iron Man 3,”  Downey reprises his role as the brash and brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man. When his world is destroyed, he embarks on a quest to find those responsible. The journey tests him at every turn, and as he fights his way back, notes the press release, Stark “discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?”

We could ask the very same thing of this lederhosen ensemble.

There’s a deep sartorial question here. We hope he leaves the lederhosen in Germany, although if he likes, he might want to bring back German wurst and bierhaus.

“Iron Man 3” also stars Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, Stephanie Szostak, James Badge Dale, Jon Favreau and Ben Kingsley. Directed by Shane Black from a screenplay by Drew Pearce and Shane Black, it’s based on Marvel’s iconic Super Hero Iron Man, who first appeared on the pages of “Tales of Suspense” (#39) in 1963 and had his solo comic book debut with “The Invincible Iron Man” (#1) in May of 1968.

“Iron Man 3” hits theaters in 3D, RealD 3D, and IMAX 3D on May 3, 2013 and we don’t think Walt Disney is doing anywhere near enough press.
