Allison Waldman

I was saddened to learn this week that my colleague and friend Allison Waldman had passed away after battling cancer.

I worked with “A,” as I called her, when I was an editor at TV Squad during the pre-HuffPo days. We were a great little team of writers, and many of the friendships I made there I still have to this day.

Allison was always up for anything and could somehow turn any story into an interesting and entertaining read. You can read all of her stories in the TV Squad/AOLTV archives.

I especially loved her coverage of daytime soaps, and as Keith McDuffee noted over at CliqueClack, at one time they entertained the idea of an offshoot called “TV Squad Daytime.” I’m sorry that never happened, because her passion for that niche ran deep, as evidenced in her work for other outlets like SoapCentral.com.

Also check out her YouTube Channel, where she opined on her favorite subject, Barbra Streisand — right up until shortly before her passing. Allison’s last videocast was March 31, 2013.

Yes, it was clear from the moment I learned of her nickname, email and Twitter handle, “barbfile,” that Allison loved all things Barbra Streisand. Last year, she successfully funded a Kickstarter project titled “Barbra Memories,” a compilation of fan memories which Allison was able to personally hand to Barbra when she met her backstage at her concert in Brooklyn, New York in October 2012.

As noted on the Facebook page, AllisonMemories, she even garnered a beautiful tribute from Streisand herself, as reported in ContactMusic.com:

Barbra Streisand ScrapbookStatement by Barbra Streisand (April 16, 2013):

“I was very saddened to hear of Allison Waldman’s passing Monday. She had been struggling bravely for many years to beat cancer. I knew Allison over the years as a very good writer and a kind and loyal fan of mine who created and wrote “The Barbra Files” magazine and “The Barbra Streisand Scrapbook” … she was always wonderful to me. She was dedicated to the accuracy of the news she conveyed, and she shaped her stories with great style. I was so happy to finally get to meet Allison at my Brooklyn concert this past Fall and to be able to thank her personally for her encouragement and dedication. I extend to her family and friends my heartfelt sympathies. She will be certainly missed by all of us.” — Barbra Streisand

Rest in sweet peace, Allison. You will be greatly missed.

  1. That was a sweet tribute from you and from Barbra. I’m sorry about your friend. She seemed like the kind of fan all celebrities would wish for…and also a great person and writer. It is obvious that she will be sorely missed. Xo
