Sofia Coppola’s The Bling Ring Examines Culture of Celebrity

The Bling Ring

It’s been a while since we’ve heard from Sofia Coppola, whose last feature was 2010’s Somewhere,” an odd little gem of a film starring Stephen Dorff as an aimless actor, who lives in a hotel that looks like LA’s Chateau Marmont, and reexamines his life when his 11 year-old daughter (Elle Fanning) comes to visit.

Coppola’s latest film, “The Bling Ring,” comes out June 14, and it’s about a group of out of control teenagers who take a joy ride in the Hollywood Hills that turns into a crime spree involving the homes of Paris Hilton, Orlando Bloom, Lindsay Lohan and others. Here’s the real-life story on which the movie is based.

The film features a grown up, sexy-looking Emma Watson, and Leslie Mann, who plays her mother. Other cast members include Israel Broussard, Katie Chang, George Rock and Gavin Rossdale. I wonder if there’s a Lindsay Lohan look-alike character in the film.

The press release from A24 reads: “Oscar-winning filmmaker Sofia Coppola takes us inside the world of these teens, where their youthful naivete and excitement is amplified by today’s culture of celebrity and luxury brand obsession. The members of the Bling Ring introduce us to temptations that any teenager would find hard to resist. And what starts out as youthful fun spins out of control, revealing a sobering view of our modern culture.”

Check out “The Bling Ring” trailer and tell us, do you think this movie will help to dispel teenagers’ obsession with the culture of celebrity?
