Well! Just when we all thought “Drop Dead Diva“ was dead and gone (much to our chagrin), Lifetime revealed that the hour-long drama will be revived for season five.
Lifetime canceled the show in January after talks with studio Sony Pictures Television about cost-cutting options stalled. Apparently, both sides have agreed to a cost-effective agreement.
“Drop Dead Diva” centers on an aspiring model, Deborah “Deb” Dobkins, who was killed in a car crash and brought back to life as lawyer Jane Bingum (Brooke Elliot). The season four finale, which marked a season-high 2.76 million viewers in September, ended on a cliffhanger with Jane’s new husband Owen (Lex Medlin) dying and coming back to life with old Jane’s soul. Talk about some complicated relationships!
Margaret Cho, April Bowlby, Kate Levering, Jackson Hurst, Josh Stamberg and Carter MacIntyre co-starred on the series, which made headlines when it cast Kim Kardashian in a recurring part.
Creator and executive producer Josh Berman, must be thrilled in more ways than one. His freshman Fox show “The Mob Doctor” ended its 13-episode run Jan. 7.
“Drop Dead Diva” joins scripted dramas “The Client List,” returning March 10; the recently rebooted “Army Wives”; upcoming drama “Witches of East End”; and Marc Cherry‘s rookie soap “Devious Maids,” which was acquired from ABC.
You beat Lisa and I to it! We wanted to make sure you had something on your site about this development, so glad you’ve covered it. We’re both thrilled they’re bringing the show back. I think the writers need to avoid the cliffhanger at the end of the season this time, though, because if they don’t get picked up, it will be crazy-making. I know the cliffhanger makes people want to watch the next season, but if it ends there … ouch!
I know, right?! I’d decided I wasn’t going to watch it, knowing that it would end on a cliffhanger, but now that a new season is in the works, I’m definitely adding it to the queue.
