I’m guessing there’s probably a lot of behind the scenes finagling to get films out and about in the media as the Feb. 24 Oscar telecast draws closer. Voting is underway right now, so you can be sure the powers that be are doing everything they can to promote their films.
As the editor of this site, I get hundreds of requests every day from publicists who hope we’ll write about their film, TV show, book, music video and other projects. I wish we could write about them all, but there’s just never enough time.
So when I see gorgeous photo shoots like Time Magazine’s Oscar Issue that includes Jessica Chastain, Anne Hathaway, Hugh Jackman and other Oscar nominees, I always wonder if the magazine approached them or if the film distributor approached Time. Either way, it’s a stunning layout.
Dubbed “Great Performances,” the beautiful black and white photos by fashion photographer Paola Kudacki include 11 actors who starred in films that captured key moments in history or portrayed real-life people.
Time asked the actors — including Quvenzhané Wallis, Jessica Chastain, John Goodman and Naomi Watts — to embody their characters, but without the help of costumes or theatrical make-up. Here are a few of the results.
