If you were wondering why Matt Damon was sporting the cueball look at the Gotham Awards, this is the reason. He’s bald and badass in Sony’s Elysium, the upcoming sci-fi film from District 9 director Neill Blomkamp. He’s also mechanically enhanced. And he carries a really big gun. I don’t know if he speaks softly or not.
It’s the year 2159 and two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Shades of what’s to come? Who knows, but it makes a great movie premise.
Secretary Rhodes (Jodie Foster) is a hard line government official who’ll stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. But that doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can.
When unlucky Max (Matt Damon) is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful, will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.
I don’t believe any footage has been released yet, but the folks at Comic-Con got a look earlier this year.
Elysium is scheduled for an Aug. 9, 2013 release.
