I just posted about the 11 live-action shorts that are still in the running for an Oscar this year. I’m not usually drawn to movies about grief and loss — too sad — but this one sucked me right in.
And the process by which the film came to be is interesting, too. It’s a collaboration between Canon and Ron Howard, directed by Ron’s daughter Bryce Dallas Howard, and the first ever user-generated photo contest that invited consumers to inspire a Hollywood production. Ron Howard chose the winning 8 photographs, setting the stage for this short
When you find me tells the story of two sisters who find their carefree lives on a farm shattered by the sudden loss of their mother. Lisle, the younger and more imaginative of the two girls, becomes fixated on the idea of finding a spaceship in the woods that will transport them to heaven so they can reunite with their departed mom.
But the older sister, Aurora, is burdened with guilt and unable to share in the young girl’s naive conviction. Their opposing beliefs lead to a rift, which continues to haunt them well into their adult lives.
It’s really a beautiful film. See if you agree…
By the way, Movie Web ran a nice interview with Ron Howard here.
