Impatiently waiting for the next Star Trek movie from J.J. Abrams? Well, you’ll get a little glimpse at Star Trek Into Darkness when Paramount releases the first nine minutes in 500 digital IMAX 3D theaters on Dec. 14, 2012. The footage will play in front of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. I know – nice combo, right?

Star Trek Into Darkness, the sequel to Abrams’ 2009 film that gave the classic sci-fi franchise a reboot, marks the first time exclusive footage has played in IMAX 3D and only the third time a first-look will be released in IMAX. The film used high-resolution IMAX cameras to capture several sequences, meaning you’ll feel like you’re right in the middle of the action.

Star Trek Into Darkness is written by Damon Lindelof, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci and directed by J.J. Abrams. Abrams is producing with Bryan Burk through Bad Robot Productions, along with Lindelof, Kurtzman and Orci.

Stars include Chris Pine as James T. Kirk, Benedict Cumberbatch as Khan (rumored), Zoe Saldana as Nyota Uhura, Zachary Quinto as Spock, Karl Urban as Bones, Simon Pegg as Scotty, Anton Yelchin as Pavel Chekov, John Cho as Hikaru Sulu and Bruce Greenwood as Christopher Pike.

Star Trek Into Darkness kicks off the summer movie season with a May 17, 2013 release date.
