Happy Thanksgiving! Good time to reflect on all the great (and not-so-great) movies I’ve seen this year. Here are ten movies for which I’m thankful:
1. Brave. The beautifully animated movie about the ginger-haired princess with a mind of her own gets my vote for best animated feature of 2012.
2. Skyfall. James Bond gets a superb reboot with this 23rd Bond film, starring Daniel Craig as the British agent who goes home again.
3. Life of Pi. Ang Lee works his directorial magic on this film starring Suraj Sharma as a skinny Indian boy who finds himself lost at sea in a 26-foot lifeboat with a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker.
4. Salmon Fishing in the Yemen. Emily Blunt and Ewan McGregor star in this feel-good film about fly-fishing, a country in turmoil, and making the impossible dream possible.
5. The Hunger Games. Suzanne Collins’ beloved book comes to life in this fantasy starring Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen, a fierce warrior with a bow and arrow.
6. The Intouchables. In this most unusual of friendships, Francois Cluzet plays an aristocratic quadriplegic who hires a young man (Omar Sy) from the projects to be his caretaker.
7. The Avengers. Joss Whedon helmed this Marvel-ous tale about the famed Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) who assembles a group of superheroes to save the Earth from a mortal enemy.
8. Jiro Dreams of Sushi. This documentary follows the work of 85-year-old sushi master Jiro Ono, who runs his tiny but world-famous sushi restaurant in Tokyo.
9. The Dark Knight Rises. Christian Bale returns to play Batman, the dark hero who’s called upon to protect a city that’s branded him an enemy.
10. Wreck-It Ralph. John C. Reilly is the voice of a video game villain who sets out to become a hero, bringing havoc to the arcade where he lives.
