Animal Hospital probably won’t make it past a single season, but not for lack of trying by Crystal (The Hangover 2, Night at the Museum) the Capuchin monkey who plays Dr. Rizzo. The sight gags with Dr. Rizzo make the show.
Who cares that the show revolves around Dr. George Coleman (Justin Kirk, Andy Botwin on Weeds), a veterinarian who is gifted with his animal patients, but just can’t find his footing with humans?
Not me. There’s a cute monkey wearing scrubs on the show.
Who cares if this show is Scrubs: Animal Style?
Not me. Dr. Rizzo is making his “rounds” on a toy ambulance.
Who cares that George’s ex-girlfriend (JoAnna Garcia Swisher) has inherited the vet practice George works in and is now his boss?
Not me. Dr. Rizzo is hanging on a doorknob (laughs WILL ensue). How the cast doesn’t break out in hysterics every time Crystal is in a scene is beyond me.
Rizzo is George’s “medical assistant” and faithful companion. Shoot, she even gets third billing on the show’s web site!
In any case, forget about the plot of any episode of Animal Practice. I’ll be watching for Dr. Rizzo’s appearance, and then I’ll repeat it on my DVR.
Animal Practice is rated TV-PG, and the pilot premiered in August (you can watch it online here). Next episode airs Wed., Sept. 26, 8/7c on NBC.
