Game of Thrones returns with season two on April 1, 2012, and these images are making me absolutely giddy.

As is usually the case for HBO shows, this one has a superb official site, including a viewer’s guide, family trees, history, videos about filming in Croatia and Belfast, and a great production diary. Season one is out on [amazon_link id=”B003Y5HWMW” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]DVD/Blu-ray[/amazon_link]; and season two introduces several new characters, including Brienne, Melisandre and others.

Check them out below, along with some of your favorite denizens of Westeros. But first, a preview…

  1. This season has strayed much farther away from the books than the first one did. Not that it’s a bad thing because I’m still enjoying it a lot. But I’m a little disappointed at the same time. I’ve been reading the books since 2000 and I was really impressed with how closely the first season followed them and how well it did it.

Still, this season has been brilliant. They’ve deviated from the books but they’re still sticking closely to the plot. Not a lot of shows can tow that line as well as this one can.

    • You know, I just started reading the first book, so it’ll interesting to compare along the way. And I’m still back in season one of the show, so I’ll probably catch up to it in the book! I do love the characters – such a rich assortment of people and places and storylines.

  2. I love GOT! I liked the books too. Sex scenes are a bit over used but thankfully that’s calmed down this season. For the first time in a TV series I am actually noticing the detail in everything, clothing, backgrounds etc.. it’s really well done.
