I read on People.com today that Kim Kardashian has filed a lawsuit against Old Navy for a commercial starring Melissa Molinaro. Kardashian is claiming that the commercial, which features a female celebrity-type being photographed by paparazzi, has created “confusion in the minds of the consuming public” about Kardashian’s association with the store.
Look, I don’t know if Old Navy set out to fool us into thinking Molinaro is Kardashian, and yes, they DO look somewhat similar. Ok, they could be twins. But does Kardashian have a case here? On the one hand, she’s worked hard to build her brand, which includes her physical appearance. On the other hand, she must think she’s pretty hot stuff to think that every commercial with a dark-haired, cute girl being stalked by paparazzi is supposed to be her.
And if you look at Molinaro’s photos outside of the commercial (see photo, right), she does look very similar to Kardashian in real life, too. Is she supposed to change her appearance? Dye her hair blonde? Get plastic surgery?
The other twist to this story is that Reggie Bush is reportedly Molinaro’s boyfriend. He used to be Kardashian’s boyfriend. Talk about having a “type.”
And a couple weeks ago, Molinaro reportedly tweeted this about the whole thing (I didn’t see it on her Twitter account, so take it with a grain of salt): “We’re still talking about this?! Its JULY … this aired in February … some people have too much time on there hands … Some people think its all about them … its sad.”
Ok, so yeah, people like me are keeping this thing alive. Sorry about that, Melissa, but the lawsuit doesn’t feel right to me.
Take a look at the commercial, and tell me your thoughts in the comments below. Is Kardashian’s lawsuit justified? Or is she just capitalizing on the commercial by bringing more attention to herself? She is, after all, quite the publicity hound.
