Summer usually brings some good family flicks to theaters, and we’ve had some fun ones so far this year. And ok, a few that we’ll probably forget next week. Here’s a quick look at ‘Cars 2’ and ‘Monte Carlo.’
‘Cars 2’ – I wouldn’t put this Pixar sequel in the same league as ‘Finding Nemo,’ ‘The Incredibles,’ or ‘Toy Story,’ partly because it features an eco-fuel storyline that might be a little complicated for kids to follow. Or not, if they’re whip-smart about such things.
But it’s still a really fun movie with good takeaways for both kids and adults. There’s also a sweet homage to Paul Newman, who played Doc Hudson, Lightning’s mentor, in the original ‘Cars’ movie.

‘Monte Carlo’ – Gorgeous locations are the star of this fluffy teen flick about three girls on a romantic caper through Paris and Monte Carlo. It’s a throwback to vintage films like ‘Three Coins in the Fountain’ and ‘To Catch a Thief,’ but never quite measures up to those classics.
It could easily have aired on Nickelodeon or ABC Family rather than as a feature film. Still, fans of Disney cutie Selena Gomez will want to check out this breezy caper.
Rated PG for brief mild language; in theaters July 1, 2011; 2.5 out of 5 reels; read Jane’s full ‘Monte Carlo’ review.
