Trailer Talk: Super 8 – Train Crashes, Military Guys and Curious Teens

super 8 posterLet’s talk about ‘Super 8,’ the super-secret movie written and directed by J.J. Abrams and produced by Steven Spielberg. Anything these guys touch is gold, so I have high hopes for this sci-fi flick. I’m also a huge fan of Abrams’ baby ‘Fringe.’

It’s the summer of 1979, and a group of friends in a small Ohio town witness a catastrophic train crash while making a movie with a Super 8 camera. They soon suspect that it wasn’t an accident, and shortly thereafter,  unusual disappearances and odd events start taking place all over town.

A local deputy tries to uncover the truth, and that’s when things start spiraling into terror. You know things are getting interesting when Air Force guys in berets show up and start interrogating people. The movie has a bit of an ‘E.T.’ feel to it, only scarier.

I so identify with this movie after watching the trailer. For one thing, I was a teenager in the 70s, so that could be me with the Super 8 camera. The town also looks like the town I grew up in, so there’s that. It’s a sci-fi, which I love, and the special effects look awesome. And WHAT IS IN THAT TRAIN CAR?!

Super 8 Movie
Kyle Chandler, Ron Eldard, Elle Fanning and Joel Courtney

The cast is nothing short of wonderful — Joel Courtney, Riley Griffiths,  Elle Fanning, Zach Mills, Ryan Lee, and Gabriel Basso are a few of the kids. Noah Emmerich, Dan Castellaneta, Kyle Chandler (‘Friday Night Lights’!), Jessica Tuck (‘One Life to Live’!), A.J. Michalka, Bruce Greenberg, and Greg Grunberg (‘Heroes’!) are also in the cast.

Super 8‘ isn’t rated yet, but we’ll probably find out this week, since it hits theaters June 10, 2011. I’m guessing it’ll score a PG-13 rating.

See what you think of the trailer below. Are you super-geeked for ‘Super 8’?
