Michigan takes a lot of heat for its cold winters and dying auto plant business. But hey, I was raised on a cherry farm near Traverse City, and I still live here and love it and feel proud to be raising my own kids here.

My brothers still grow the best cherries, apples and, yes, even grapes. After a couple generations of cherry farmers, they’ve been a little reluctant to enter the grape business, but with all the wineries and vineyards in the area, it seems like a natural evolution.

And there’s lots to love about Michigan – lovely summers spent on white-sand beaches, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, and cozy winters with plenty of skiing and snowshoeing.

And, of course, the Traverse City Film Festival, which takes place this year July 26 – 31, 2011. Can’t wait! As soon as I know the movie line-up, I’ll post it here on the blog.

Until then, enjoy this lovely Pure Michigan ad, filmed right here in the Traverse City area.

  1. Very nice. I’m also enjoying the Chrysler ads featuring Detroit. I have a soft spot for blue collar towns/cities and I’m glad the car makers are highlighting the city that made them what they are.

  2. I always enjoy the Pure Michgan ads when I see them on line and on television — really well done, and to use a cliche, a breath of fresh air. I’m glad they decided to film one in the Traverse City area. Mulling over making a trip to Michigan this fall…

  3. I think I am a would be fan of Michigan. I’ve never been there, or not that I can remember. But some of the coolest writers I know (like you and Meagan Francis and Cindy LaFerle) live in Michigan, so it has to be an awesome place!

  4. Traverse City and the surrounding area is breathtakingly beautiful! These Pure Michigan ads are brilliant. Lucky, lucky you being able to live up there full time!
