New on DVD and Blu-Ray: Battle L.A., The Glades, Red Riding Hood

Battle Los AngelesLots of fun new stuff on DVD and Blu-ray this week. Take a look and see what strikes your fancy…

‘Battle: Los Angeles’: I saw this in theaters, and it’s not a bad movie, just not that memorable. It stars Aaron Eckhart as a Marine Staff Sergeant who’s about to retire but finds himself back in action assisting a 2nd Lieutenant and his platoon as they fight to reclaim the city of Los Angeles from ALIEN INVADERS! I put that in caps, but there really aren’t that many aliens in this movie. It’s more about the soldiers. It’s a lesser version of ‘Black Hawk Down.’

‘Battle: Los Angeles’ is better than ‘Skyline,’ but nowhere near as good as ‘Super 8.’ Read more of my thoughts on it here. Official Site; rated PG-13 for sustained and intense sequences of war violence and destruction, and for language. ‘The Glades: The Complete First Season’: Just started watching this fun TV show that airs on the A&E Network. It stars ultra-cute Aussie Matt Passmore as a Chicago cop who bugs out to Florida and joins the police force there. ‘Hall Pass’: It’s amazing to think that Owen Wilson went from this frat-bro-type comedy to ‘Midnight in Paris,’ but there you have it. I haven’t watched ‘Hall Pass’ yet, but it’s here in my stack, and I’ll post a review when I do.

The movie stars Wilson and Jason Sudeikis as restless best friends who get a “hall pass” from their wives — one week to do whatever they want. It’s from the Farrelly Brothers, and I generally like a lot of their stuff, so we’ll see how this shakes out. Official Site; rated R for crude and sexual humor throughout, language, some graphic nudity and drug use. Buy [amazon_link id=”B004EPYZSA” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]’Hall Pass’ on Amazon[/amazon_link].

‘Harry Potter & the Half-Blood Prince (Ultimate Edition)’: Tons of bonus material on these Ultimate Editions that Warner Bros. is releasing. They’re determined to ring every last dollar out of the Harry Potter franchise, but there really is some cool stuff on these versions.

Warner Bros. didn’t send me either ‘Half-Blood Prince’ or ‘Order of the Phoenix,’ but based on the Ultimate Editions of the earlier movies I received, these are great additions to any HP collection. Buy ‘Half-Blood Prince’ on Amazon. Buy ‘Order of the Phoenix’ on Amazon.

Red Riding Hood, Amanda Seyfried
What big eyes you have, Amanda Seyfried of 'Red Riding Hood'

‘Red Riding Hood’: Contrary to most critics, I actually loved this movie. It’s magical, it’s mystical, and it takes the beloved fairy tale in seriously new directions. It’s directed by ‘The Twilight Saga: New Moon’ helmer Catherine Hardwicke, and Amanda Seyfried does indeed have the biggest eyes I’ve ever seen, which makes her the perfect Red Riding Hood. Read my full review of ‘Red Riding Hood.’ Official Site; rated PG-13 for violence and creature terror, and some sensuality.  [amazon_link id=”B003Y5H556″ target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Buy ‘Red Riding Hood’ on Amazon[/amazon_link].

‘N-Secure’: I’m not gonna lie. I have no idea what this is, but I’m tacking it on here, because I just received it via FedEx today. It stars Cordell Moore as a businessman who wants to control every aspect of his life, including his beautiful girlfriend Robyn (Essence Atkins). But it only pushes her into the arms of the handsome fiance of her best friend. Also stars Tempestt Bledsoe of ‘The Cosby Show’ fame. Official Site; rated R for language, some sexual content and brief violence. Buy ‘N-Secure’ on Amazon.

This is a movie that really isn’t anything new. In fact, if you seen Black Hawk Down and District 9, it may look familiar. What this film does that makes it so great is that it can combine these elements together so well, that you really can’t believe that this hasn’t been done before. They made the right choice by including a Marine platoon into the script, rather than…
