I know it’s MTV. I know it’s geared for the young, hipster crowd. Does saying “hipster” make me old? Probably. And apparently, I’m SUCH a mom.
I was trying to watch the MTV Movie Awards with my 14-year-old daughter last night, but had to keep turning the channel because of inappropriate stuff. Like a big scene right off the bat where host Jason Sudeikis finds himself in a film montage that includes lesbians having sex (a la ‘The Hangover’).
First of all, film montages where the host puts himself or herself into the movie are so 2008. Second, Jason Sudeikis just wasn’t that funny. He was trying to be edgy and sarcastic and insulting to the the people in the audience, and everything just fell flat. At least Ricky Gervais did it with style for the Golden Globes.
Let’s see, a few other low points included a bit about lasers involving a certain part of the male anatomy, dogs humping in Jim Carrey’s digitized suit (you had to be there, but be thankful if you weren’t), Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake groping each other onstage, and Robert Pattinson saying the f-word onstage without it being bleeped out.
One highlight was Tyrese Gibson’s public service message about not texting while driving, even though they had to get a Vin Diesel lookalike to do the spot with him. Apparently, the ‘Fast Five‘ tough guy realized the show would be awful and wanted nothing to do with it.
Another highlight was seeing Alexys Nycole Sanchez win for Best Line in ‘Grownups.’ She was so cute giving her acceptance speech. But a big fat pox on Sudeikis for following up by saying she’d just checked into Chocolate Rehab. Yeah, I get it. That’s what the line was about. Still not funny. And for the record, I loved ‘The Hangover.’
As for who won … as usual, the ‘Twilight’ crowd might as well have camped out on stage, because they won so many awards. Every time a ‘Twilight’ name was announced, the camera would pan to Emma Watson clapping politely, despite the fact that ‘Harry Potter’ was shut out of yet another award. Check out all the winners at MTV.com, and watch Alexys’ acceptance speech below.
Did you watch the awards show? Was it wildly inappropriate? Did it make you weep for our kids growing up in this era?
