First Look: Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark Starring Katie Holmes

Don't Be Afraid of the Dark 2011 PosterDon’t Be Afraid of the Dark,’ in theaters Aug. 26, 2011, is a remake of a 1973 TV movie starring Kim Darby as a neurotic housewife who unwittingly releases demons in the old mansion she and her husband just moved into. Warner Archives released the film on DVD in 2009, so [amazon_link id=”B002WJHBD6″ target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]check it out[/amazon_link] if you haven’t seen it yet.

I have a copy here somewhere, so will dredge it up and watch before this new one comes out. Especially since Guillermo del Toro, producer and writer of of the remake, says the original is the scariest TV production ever made. That’s saying something coming from the guy who made ‘Pan’s Labyrinth.’

In the new version, Bailee Madison stars as a young girl named Sally who moves to Rhode Island to live with her father (Guy Pearce) and his new girlfriend (Katie Holmes) in the 19th-century mansion they’re restoring. While exploring the house, Sally starts to hear voices coming from creatures in the basement whose hidden agenda is to claim her as one of their own.

Hmmm … I’m going to have to be in the right frame of mind to see this one, because horror movies usually scare the crap out of me. Just the poster freaks me out. The movie is directed by Troy Nixey and rated R for violence and terror.

Here’s a still of Katie Holmes and, below that, the trailer (but it’s scary, so watch at your own risk!). Thoughts?

The whispering and crawling-under-the-bedsheet scene scared the heck out of me haha.

Same here. Totally creeped me out. Then again, I didn’t think Paranormal Activity (1 or 2) was all that scary for some reason. But this one looks terrifying.
