Box Office Report, May 6-8: Thor Rules!

Thor, Chris Hemsworth‘Thor’ scored big at the box office this Mother’s Day weekend, debuting at No. 1 with an estimated $66 million, about as much as the rest of the top five combined. That’s no surprise, considering the movie’s PR machine has been in overdrive for months now.

While ‘Thor‘ didn’t open as heartily as other Marvel movies (the first ‘[amazon_link id=”B0021L8V1Q” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Iron Man[/amazon_link]’ topped $102 million in 2008), it was in line with expectations. Some 60 percent of the cash was generated from 3D and IMAX screenings, and the movie has already earned $176 million overseas. Nice job, God of Thunder.

After opening at No. 1 last week, ‘Fast Five‘ dropped 63 percent, falling to second place. Still, a weekend total estimated at $32.5 million is nothing to weep about, and a ten-day total of $139.9 million is fine, too.

Competing for third place were the two wedding-centric comedies ‘Jumping the Broom‘ and ‘Something Borrowed.’ At this writing, ‘Jumping’ has a slight edge with $13.7 million, compared with $13.2 million for ‘Borrowed.’ That’s not bad, considering that ‘Broom’ opened in 869 fewer theaters than ‘Borrowed.’

Critics’ reports are following suit – no one seems to like ‘Borrowed,’ but ‘Broom’ is scoring some decent reviews. Considering that ‘Borrowed’ cost a reported $35 million, it’ll have a tough time making back its budget.

‘Rio’ clocked in at fifth place with an estimated $8.2 million. That’s a decline of 45 percent from last week, but the four-week total is still $114.9 million. It’s a really fun, colorful movie (check out my review of ‘Rio’) that’s great family viewing.

  1. ‘Thor,’ $66.0 million (3,955 screens), new release

  9. ‘Soul Surfer,’ $2.1 million (1,781), $36.7 million
