When I heard they were making ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes,’ my first thought was, eh, what could they do that would rival the original movies, dated though they were? But after seeing the trailer, now I’m excited about it. That’s due in part to the magic of WETA Workshop, the company that did the special effects for ‘Avatar’ ‘The Lord of the Rings,’ and a gazillion other films. These apes look darn real and entertaining and creepy.
In theaters August 5, 2011, ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes‘ is actually a prequel to the original films set in present day San Francisco. It reminds me a little of ‘Splice,’ in that it makes you question whether humans should be messing about with DNA and genetics and, as the MST3K gang says, other science stuff. Only I’m quite positive this movie will be way, way better than ‘Splice.’ Not a big fan of that movie and thought it was the beginning of the end for Adrien Brody. But I digress…
‘Apes’ is directed by Rupert Wyatt, who probably isn’t that well known, but most recently wrote and directed 2008’s ‘The Escapist.’ The movie stars James Franco, Tom Felton, Freida Pinto, John Lithgow, Tyler Labine and Andy Serkis (Gollum!) as Caesar the Ape.
Take a look at the trailer and see what you think. Cheesy? Or something to look forward to?
