‘Tangled’ is one of my favorite family movies of 2010. It’s Disney’s modern re-telling of the simple story we all know and love, injected with some awesome girl-power, fun characters, gorgeous settings and beautiful songs. And by the way, it should have been nominated for a Best Animated Feature at the Oscars and was also robbed of Best Song. If you don’t get goosebumps listening to ‘I See the Light,’ then something is terribly wrong!
All that said, I’ll just lick my emotional wounds by watching the [amazon_link id=”B004G6009U” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]’Tangled’ blu-ray edition[/amazon_link] over and over again. The film was released in a Two-Disc Combo Pack on March 29, 2011, and tells the story of the fair maiden Rapunzel (voiced by Mandy Moore) who’s lived her entire life in a tower lorded over by someone claiming to be her mother (voiced by Tony Award-winning Donna Murphy). I don’t think I’m giving away any major spoilers there. But when a runaway thief (voiced by Zachary Levi) stumbles upon Rapunzel, she realizes there’s a big wide world out there just waiting to be discovered.
You can read my full review of the theatrical release of ‘Tangled’ here (5 out of 5 Reels!). It really is an awesome family movie that just makes you feel good about the world. It’s rated PG for brief, mild violence, and bonus points for appealing to both kids and adults.
BONUS FEATURES: ‘Tangled’ doesn’t include a ton of bonus features, but there’s still a nice assortment, including both blu-ray and DVD discs (much more vivid and colorful in 2D), as well as…
Blu-ray:
‘Untangled: The Making of a Fairy Tale’ – Hosted by stars Zachary Levi and Mandy Moore, this 12-minute making-of featurette includes fun info about the production, including the fact that the film boasts the biggest crowd scene in Disney history (thanks to magical software). Also, Walt Disney started working on a Rapunzel adaptation as early as 1940.
Two unused “original storybook openings” – These are animated sketches of the “once upon a time” opening of the film.
Three deleted scenes totaling 12 minutes, introduced by directors Nathan Greno and Byron Howard. One is an alternate take of the Snuggly Duckling called the Jaunty Moose, another is an extended scene that takes place after Rapunzel and Flynn exit the pub, and the third involves a fortune-telling monkey and a gypsy. That one is pretty funny.
Extended versions of two songs – ‘When Will My Life Begin’ is re-cut to open the film rather than appear five minutes into the film, and ‘Mother Knows Best’ is campier than the film version. Love the music in ‘Tangled.’
50th Animated Feature Countdown – A montage of scenes from each of the films, although unless you’re an absolute Disney nut, you might not recognize ALL of them. Some identifiers would have been nice.
9 Tangled Teasers – A collection of commercials made for the theatrical release of ‘Tangled.’ Some are spoofs based on breaking news or infomercials, some are just funny teasers.
