Chris Evans is Captain America: The First Avenger

Captain America: The First Avenger – Watch the Trailer

Certainly one of the most anticipated movies of the year, Marvel’s ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’ hits theaters July 22, 2011. It’s got “summer blockbuster” written all over it!

captain-america-the-first-avenger-poster If you’re not a comic book fan, here’s a little primer for you: Chris Evans plays Steve Rogers, a kind of puny guy who’s rejected from military service. So he volunteers for a top secret research project that turns him into … Captain America! The ultimate superhero dedicated to defending America’s ideals.

It’s directed by Joe Johnston, who also helmed ‘The Wolfman,’ ‘[amazon_link id=”B00121QGUO” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Hidalgo[/amazon_link],’ and ‘[amazon_link id=”B000BCE918″ target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Jurassic Park III[/amazon_link].’ I wouldn’t say that’s necessarily a great list of credits, so it’ll be interesting to see what he does with this movie.

The cast is full of movie stars: Hugo Weaving (Johann Schmidt/The Red Skull), Tommy Lee Jones (Col. Chester Phillips), Stanley Tucci (Abraham Erskine), Richard Armitage (Heinz Kruger), and Hayley Atwell (Peggy Carter). Dominic Cooper plays Howard Stark, father of Tony Stark from the ‘[amazon_link id=”B001GAPC1K” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Iron Man[/amazon_link]’ series.

I don’t delve too much into comic books, but I know there are lots of people who do – many of them grownups. I was talking to my All the Rage podcast buddies about this, and comic books and graphic novels have really come into the mainstream over the past decade or so.

I did pick up a ‘Buffy: The Vampire Slayer’ comic, and found it fun, although probably not something I’m going to do on a regular basis (I’d just as soon watch the series again).

Anyway, check out the trailer for ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’ and see what you think. I’m geeked about it, and it’s always fun to watch the bad guys get their you-know-whats wooped by superheroes.

I’m cautiously optimistic, but the action looks good. And it’s gotta be better than this – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cs8rFsmhNTc. Although, to be fair, I did like that movie as a kid… I rented it twice.

Ha! That 1990 trailer is hilarious. I thought maybe it was a Funny or Die parody at first. But I should really watch it before I trash it too much.
