I never knew this before, but apparently, if your head itches and your hand starts shaking, it’s possible you could be hosting a demon in your body.
That’s what I learned watching ‘The Rite,’ the movie starring Anthony Hopkins as Father Lucas, a priest in Italy who specializes in exorcisms.
Colin O’Donoghue plays an American priest who either has to follow in his father’s footsteps and become a mortician or go to school and study to be a priest.
Tough choice, although I still don’t understand why he couldn’t go his own way and do whatever he wanted. But I’m a free spirit that way.
Anyway, he figures he’ll study to be a priest and then bug out before graduation day. Only, there’s a little issue with his scholarship money or something, and he ends up being shipped off to Italy to study exorcisms, because the Catholic Church is in the process of including exorcists in their churches.
But he’s unsure of his faith, and even more unsure after he meets Father Lucas and observes his questionable exorcism practices. That’s where we learn about the connection of itchy heads and shaky hands to demons.
The movie is a little creepy – probably too creepy for a PG-13 rating – but it kind of drags, too. I still haven’t seen ‘The Exorcist’ and probably never will (too scary!), but ‘The Rite’ was do-able for me. But then, I really like Anthony Hopkins, so I’ll see just about any movie he’s in, including the ultra-creepy ‘Silence of the Lambs.’
I’m really glad he didn’t retire from acting like he threatened to several years ago. And he really does play a great creepy guy, although my favorite films of his are the Merchant-Ivory films like ‘Howards End’ and ‘The Remains of the Day.’ Fantastic.
