I posted a few photos earlier tonight of the Oscars 2011 red carpet, and here’s a few more. Overall, I thought the dresses were nice. Yeah, just nice. Nothing completely spectacular, and none that jumped off the screen at me. Even Helena Bonham Carter was somewhat subdued — for her anyway. The only dress I really didn’t get was Cate Blanchett’s. It just looked weird. See what you think, and leave comments below.

I agree with you. I was wondering whether Cate Blanchett was perhaps modeling an Australian designer she wanted to promote. Usually she looks so stunning. This dress was just weird.
Looks like there was a lot of red. I am embarrassed to say I don’t know which one is Cate!
seems to me Cate’s dress was fine too, though I am wondering the same thing as Alexandra, above, if she might have been promoting a favourite designer. Amy Adams and Gwyneth Paltrow had my favourite — very different — dresses, I think, also liked Sandra Bullock’s choice.
I always love looking at the fashions. When I first looked at Cate’s dress, I thought it was kind of strange-looking, but the more I looked at it, the more I liked it (although I’m probably in the minority). Gwyneth’s was absolutely stunning, dahling 🙂
I always look forward to what Helena Bonham Carter choose. She seems like such a free spirit I was bummed she didn’t go for something a bit wackier.
Natalie Portman looks fantastic, as always!
Here’s how some struck me:
MIla Kunis: lingerie
Halley Berry and Hillary Swank: Star Power
Nicole Kidman–odd
Sandra Bullock–uncomfortabel
Annette Bening: Matronly (Too bad, cause she’s beautiful)
But I actually liked Helen Carter Bonham’s look in motion. I think that the picture makes it look boring.
How nice to just be able to be a critic instead of having to actually perform!
I think that the word is uncomfortaBLE–whoops.
While I’m not opposed to fawning over actresses’ frocks at the Oscars, I do like Helena Bonham Carter’s anti-fashion-let’s-keep-the-focus-on-films stance.
I’m in the minority on liking Cate Blanchett’s dress – yes, it’s off-kilter, but I get so bored with the mermaidy, sheer, sequined princess gowns all over the place. Truthfully, I HATED Jennifer Lawrence’s dress. I know she was inspired by the classic Farrah Fawcett swimsuit pic, but it seemed way too sporty.
[…] Loved all the gowns, though wasn’t crazy about Cate Blanchett’s dress (pictured, right). Check out more red carpet photos here. […]
I think they were all tasteful. No weirdness. Just beautiful dresses on beautiful women. The lacy booby thing on Mila is interesting.
