There are two kinds of villains in theaters today – an evil scientist with a heart of gold and some creepy aliens with horns. I might see the aliens later, but tonight, it’s all about the scientist! Here’s the rundown. What are YOU seeing this weekend?
‘Despicable Me’: It’s a happy suburban neighborhood with white picket fences and flower gardens. But in the black house with the dead lawn is a secret hideout where Gru (voiced by Steve Carell) is planning to steal the moon. He’s got shrink rays! He’s got freeze rays! He’s got adorable little minions! And he’s got … three orphaned girls who bring out the best in him. Also features Jason Segel, Russell Brand, Kristen Wiig, Miranda Cosgrove, and Julie Andrews. 95 minutes; rated PG for rude humor and mild action.
More after the jump…
‘Predators’: From one of my favorite directors – Robert Rodriguez – comes a new chapter in the Predator universe. Adrien Brody stars as Royce, a mercenary who reluctantly leads a group of elite warriors on an alien planet. What they don’t realize is they’ve been brought there not as hunters … but as PREY!
Yeah, not a good thing to discover when you’re marooned on a distant planet. Also stars Topher Grace, Alice Braga, Laurence Fishburne, and Danny Trejo. 106 minutes; rated R for strong creature violence and gore, and pervasive language.
Opening in limited release today: ‘The Girl Who Played With Fire’ (the second in the ‘Dragon Tattoo’ trilogy), ‘The Kids Are All Right,’ ‘Winnebago Man,’ and ‘[Rec]2.’
