Have You Ever Drank Blood? My Family Did. Tru Blood, That Is

tru-blood-carbonated-beverage Some time ago, the nice people who rep Tru Blood sent me a case of four bottles of the beverage pegged to the HBO show, ‘True Blood.’

I have to say, it’s a little disconcerting drinking something with “blood” in the title. Even though you KNOW it’s not real blood, there’s still that little inkling of, but what if it really IS blood? Especially when the top of the label sports the words “O Positive.”

But of course, it’s not. Blood oranges don’t have real blood in them, and that’s what this is: Blood Orange Carbonated Beverage. At least, I guess that’s what it is. That’s what the label says, but the ingredients list “natural flavors,” no “blood oranges.”

At any rate, I thought it’d be fun to do a little family taste test, so follow me after the jump for the rundown of everyone’s first impressions. And if you want your own True Blood, get it here; 4-pack for $20.

More after the jump…

Jane: “Cold, refreshing, biting. Sweet-tart. Leaves a sparkling after-taste. Like there’s a little fireworks explosion in your mouth.”

Tim (Jane’s husband): “It tastes like blood [he’s kidding … I hope]. Way too sweet. Too artificial. It tastes like artificial orange and strawberry mixed together. I think if I drank a whole bottle, I’d throw up.”

Will (15-year-old son): “Shampoo pop with sparkling water. You know, the pop that comes in bottles that look like shampoo bottles [I got out of him that he’s talking about SoBe].”

Marissa (13-year-old daughter). “Like Faygo. Red Faygo, not Orange Faygo. Good after-taste. Fruity and delicious.”

So, you can see that the girls liked it, and the boys didn’t. I couldn’t drink a lot of it, but a little now and then would be fine. For the record, here’s what’s in Tru Blood:

Carbonated Water, Cane Sugar, Citric Acid, Natural Flavors, Potassium Citrate, Carmine Coloring, Potassium Sorbate, Sucralose, Sodium Citrate, Sodium Benzoate, Caffeine, Niacin (Vitamin B3), Caramel Coloring, Red 40, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Vitamin B6, Cyanocobalamin (Vitamin B12), Folic Acid, Gum Accacia, Ester Gum.

And here are some drink suggestions (from the Tru Blood people, that is; I know nothing about mixing drinks):

The Fangbanger: Tru Blood, Vodka

Death on the Beach: Tru Blood, Peach Schnapps, Pineapple Juice, Vodka

Plasmapolitan: Tru Blood, Citron, Cointreau, Fresh Lime Juice

Has anyone else tried Tru Blood (the beverage)? Did you like it? Leave thoughts below!
