SKY
HIGH
by Jane Louise
Boursaw
Rated PG
for action violence and some mild language. 100 minutes. Directed by
Mike Mitchell. Released in theaters July 29, 2005.
Sky High, located high in the sky among the clouds, is the first
and only high school for kids with super-powers. While there, they learn
how to battle villains, hone their powers and, of course, save the
world. But in some ways, it’s no different than other high schools, only
instead of geeks, jocks and bookworms, Sky High kids are divided into
heroes and sidekicks. Everyone wants to be a hero. No one wants to be a
sidekick.
This year’s class includes Will Stronghold (Michael Angarano),
son of the world’s most legendary superheroes, The Commander and
Jetstream (Kurt Russell and Kelly Preston). The only problem is, Will
doesn’t *have any super powers
– at least not yet. But somehow, he has to survive his freshman year
while dealing with an overbearing gym coach, a bully with super speed,
and a dangerous rebel with a grudge (who has the ability to shoot fire
from his hands) – not to mention the usual angst, parental expectations
and girl problems that accompany teenage life.
When an evil villain threatens his family and friends, will his
superpowers come through?! I think we all know the answer to that.
THE WRAP-UP: My first thought was, how weird to see
Kurt Russell and Kelly Preston sporting superhero costumes and starring
in a comic book movie. But somehow, it all works and I surprised myself
by actually liking this movie. My kids loved this movie, but it’s a
great family flick for all ages, though a little draggy in spots.
The storyline
moved along and the characters were interesting and well-developed. The
wild air-bus ride to and from the school was also a highlight, and I
love the performance of Danielle Panabaker, who plays Will's love
interest.
SCORE: 3 out of 4 Reels.
