SISTERHOOD
OF THE TRAVELING PANTS
by Jane Louise
Boursaw
Rated PG
for thematic elements, some sensuality, and language. Directed by Ken
Kwapis. Written by Delia Ephron. Released in theaters June 3, 2005.
With a snappy
title and a tag-line of “Laugh. Cry. Share the Pants,” how can a movie
go wrong?
This
coming-of-age dramedy, based on Ann Brashares’ best-selling novel, is
about a special summer in the lives of four lifelong friends (Amber
Tamblyn, Alexis Bledel, America Ferrara, Blake Lively). About to be
separated for the first time, the 16-year-old girlfriends devise a plan
to keep in touch over the summer: They purchase a pair of thrift-store
jeans that each will wear for a week to see what luck they’ll bring her
before sending them on to the next (magically, the pants fit each of the
girls' quite different body types perfectly). Each faces serious
coming-of-age problems, and somehow the pants help them through.
THE
WRAP-UP:
This is a wonderful movie about life, loss, friendship and family, made
even more wonderful with great casting, superb acting, and Delia
Ephron's (You've Got Mail) insightful script. While the themes in
this movie are too mature for very young kids (pop in a Dora the
Explorer video for some Young-Girl Power!), girls aged 8 to adult
will love this chick-flick about lifelong friends (a next-step-up from
Lizzie Maguire).
Fans of
Tamblyn (Joan of Arcadia) and Bledel (The Gilmore Girls)
have been lining up at the ticket counter to see their female heroes on
the big screen. And with Arcadia in renewal limbo, we’ll likely
see more of the talented Tamblyn in future movies. (Those of us “in the
know” can say we knew her as the fledgling Emily on General Hospital.)
She's not your typical Hollywood ingenue (she recently said something
about having a big booty recently and loving it!), and that's why I
believe she'll have true staying power in the business, without being
sucked into the whole L.A. "scene".
SCORE:
4 out of 4 Reels.
