“Listen up … we have been boarded by armed pirates…”

The first full-length UK trailer for “Captain Phillips” is out, and it looks like another great role for Tom Hanks. One thing I love about Hanks — other than, you know, he’s Tom Hanks — is that he continues to act, even though he has a thriving career behind the camera producing and directing. Maybe he knows the world is better off when we get to see him on screen every now and then.

In “Captain Phillips,” he stars as Captain Richard Phillips, commander of the shipping vessel the MV Maersk Alabama, which was hijacked by Somali pirates in 2009. It was the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in two hundred years, and Phillips spent three days as a hostage of the Somali pirates before being rescued by Navy SEALs in a raid.

Based on the memoir by the real-life Phillips, “A Captain’s Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALS, and Dangerous Days at Sea,” the movie is directed by Paul Greengrass, who helmed the “Bourne Trilogy,” “Bloody Sunday,” “United 93,” and “Green Zone.” All intense movies, so he’s a good choice for this film, which looks to be a nail-biter.

The screenplay was written by Billy Ray, who penned “Flightplan,” “Breach,” and “State of Play,” and the movie also stars Catherine Keener, Max Martini and John Magaro.

“Captain Phillips” arrives in theaters Oct. 11, 2013.
