Les Misérables, Lincoln, Silver Linings Playbook Top SAG Nominations

The Screen Actors Guild announced their nominations this morning and Les Misérables, Lincoln and Silver Linings Playbook shared the top spot with four nods each.

Each of the movies above received best actor nods for their male leads: Bradley Cooper (Silver Linings); Hugh Jackman (Les Miz), and Daniel Day-Lewis (Lincoln). The other two nominees in this category were Denzel Washington (Flight) and John Hawkes (The Sessions).

Jennifer Lawrence – the Oscar race frontrunner – received a best actress nomination, along with Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty), Marion Cotillard (Rust and Bone), Helen Mirren (Hitchcock) and Naomi Watts (The Impossible).

For best cast performance, the closest the guild has to best picture, they chose Argo, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Les Misérables, Lincoln, and Silver Linings Playbook.

In the supporting actor category the nominees include Alan Arkin (Argo), who told me on the red carpet for the premiere of Stand Up Guys that he was “having a very good year.” He wasn’t kidding.

Other nominees are Javier Bardem (SkyFall), Robert De Niro (Silver Linings) Philip Seymour Hoffman (The Master) and Tommy Lee Jones (Lincoln).

In the female category, we’re betting Oscar gold is between Sally Field (Lincoln) and Anne Hathaway (Les Miz). The other nominees are Helen Hunt (The Sessions), Nicole Kidman (The Paperboy) and Maggie Smith (The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel).

I’m happy to see Kidman receive recognition for The Paperboy, a film where she played a trashy Southern Barbie. The film received mixed reviews, but Kidman was terrific and gave it her all. At a press conference for the film at the New York Film Festival where it screened, Kidman said, “I’ve never been in a film that’s been uniformly lauded, ever, so I do not know that feeling. But I know the feeling of making films that polarize people, I do know the feeling of films that make people angry, films that make people uncomfortable, and I’m very comfortable in that.”

Kidman also received a nomination for best actress in a TV movie or miniseries for Hemingway & Gellhorn.

Modern Family received four nominations for primetime television programs, while Boardwalk Empire Breaking Bad, Downtown Abbey, Game Change, Homelandand  30 Rock each received three nods.
