THE
LEGEND OF ZORRO
by Jane Louise
Boursaw
Rated PG for sequences of violence/peril and
action, language, and a couple of suggestive moments. 126 min. Directed
by Martin Campbell. Columbia Pictures. Released in theaters Oct. 28,
2005.
Wild swordfights, stunning acrobatics, and amazing
horse stunts nobody does it better than Antonio Banderas, and now he's
back in this sequel to 1998's "The Mask of Zorro".
Set ten years after the first movie, it's 1850 and
Old California is at a crossroads on whether to join the rest of
America. Zorro, a.k.a. Alejandro de la Vega, is still protecting the
public from bad boys in this case, the evil Armand (Rufus Sewell),
leader of a secret underground organization out to destroy America.
Zorro now has a wife, Elena (Catherine Zeta-Zones)
and a 10-year-old son, Joaquin (Adrian Alonso), who knows nothing of his
father's secret identity. But their family unit is jeopardized by,
well... I won't tell you why, because that'll give the whole plot away.
Let's just say that Joaquin has inherited some of his father's
swashbuckling gifts, and Elena gets into the action, too. You go, girl!
THE WRAP-UP: My kids and I loved this
movie. It has a LOT of action - swordfights, back-flips, whip action,
and a wild stunt on a train involving Zorro's horse, Tornado. In fact,
the funny relationship between Zorro and Tornado is one of the
highlights of this movie. The plot drags a bit in spots and is secondary
to the stunts and action. But that was ok with us. We didn't sit down in
the theater expecting to see Hamlet pondering the meaning of life.
Overall, this is a fun movie for kids 8 and up. It had enough action to
keep my 11-year-old son interested, and enough romance and horse scenes
to satisfy my 8-year-old daughter.
