ICE PRINCESS
by Jane Louise
Boursaw
Rated G. Directed
by Tim Fywell. Released in theaters March 18, 2005.
Casey Carlyle
(Michelle Trachtenberg) is a high school bookworm who gets straight A’s,
but doesn’t quite fit in with the crowd. Her fantasy of becoming a
championship figure skater is just a pipedream until she realizes that
skating is all about physics. Suddenly, she’s doing toe loops and flying
camels on her way to Olympic stardom, training with disgraced coach Kim
Cattrall and her daughter, Gen (Hayden Panettiere).
Gen’s
teenage brother, a hunky Zamboni driver (Trevor Blumas) provides
romantic encouragement. But not all is clear sailing, because Casey’s
mother (Joan Cusack) would rather see her daughter be a Harvard grad
than an ice princess.
With teen stars
Trachtenberg, Blumas, and Panettiere on the screen, this movie’s a sure
bet for the tween crowd (11 - 15), but the figure-skating and romance
might appeal more to girls than boys. It’s a clean, fun date-movie for
teens, and who knows? Maybe the tension between Casey and her mother
might spark discussion about your kid wanting to be a rock star rather
than going to college. Maybe your budding Avril Lavigne *does* have what
it takes. Then again, maybe not...
THE WRAP-UP:
With so few G-rated movies – especially aimed at the
tween/teen crowd – this one’s a fun, non-threatening movie that appeals
to all ages. And it’s nice to see Kim Cattrall branch out from her “Sex
and the City” siren mode.
SCORE:
3 out of 4 Reels.
