HERBIE:
FULLY LOADED
by Jane Louise
Boursaw
Rated
G. 92 minutes.
Directed by Angela Robinson. Released in theaters June 24, 2005.
It's not often that a G-rated movie comes along, so I was happy to see this
one in the summer line-up, and looked forward to taking my kids, 8 and
10. I'm also a big fan of the original Herbie movies (late 60's, early
70's), so was curious as to how they'd resurrect him.
In this
incarnation, Lindsay Lohan stars as Maggie Peyton, a spirited gal who
finds Herbie in a junkyard, just seconds away from being crushed! The
little Volkswagen Bug practically jumps into her line of view, and she
ends up taking him to the auto shop of her childhood friend, Kevin
(Justin Long), where sparks fly as they restore Herbie together. Later,
at a car show, Maggie -- well, Herbie, that is -- beats big-time racer
Trip Murphy (Matt Dillon), who demands a rematch.
Maggie
and Herbie end up in a NASCAR race (hey, it could happen). But here's
the catch: her father (Michael Keaton) would just as soon she didn't
race at all, even though the family has been in the racing biz for three
generations. What will happen? Well, both Maggie and Herbie are pretty
stubborn, so...
THE
WRAP-UP: Ok, I admit this movie isn't rocket science. It's just
a fun summer movie that brings back a Disney favorite and is good for
all ages. It's a fun look back for those of us who saw the original at
the theater in 1968; grade-schoolers will love seeing the little car's
wacky antics; and it has enough action to keep even the teen set interested.
Maybe not transfixed -- it's no Batman Begins -- but interested.
