I really wanted to like this movie. Really. I mean, it’s got Billy Bob Thornton and Susan Sarandon and Ethan Suplee, who plays Earl’s man-child brother on My Name is Earl. But sadly, it didn’t measure up to my expectations.

John Farley (Seann William Scott) is a famous self-help author whose book, “Letting Go: How to Get Past Your Past” is selling out in stores. It’s based on a childhood trauma caused by his gym teacher, Jasper Woodcock (Thornton), who loved insulting and belittling the kids in his class.

Imagine Farley’s shock when he goes home to Nebraska to visit his widowed mom (Sarandon) and learns that she’s engaged to none other than Mr. Woodcock. He doesn’t remember Farley, but doesn’t miss a beat at picking up where he left off, hurling insults at the now-grown kid.

Farley decides to get even with his former coach. With the help of childhood friend and former Woodcock victim Nedderman (Suplee), Farley sets out to derail his mom’s relationship with the sadistic gym teacher – who’s still teaching!

You have to wonder what Thornton and Sarandon were thinking when they signed on for this lame-brain movie. Are they in financial straits? Because that’s the only reason I can think why they would have done it. The plot’s predictable, the jokes are dumb, and the characters are one-dimensional. Let’s just hope they make better choices on their next movie!
