I was ready for a good family movie, and ‘Hop’ delivered the goods—wrapped up in cotton candy and delivered by Easter bunnies and cute chicks. It’s adorable!

‘Hop’ is a blend of live action and CG animation, with British actor Russell Brand voicing the part of the main character, E.B. (short for Easter Bunny). E.B. lives on Easter Island (yes, the one with the ancient rock statues) with his dad, voiced by Hugh Laurie (a departure from his cranky Dr. House role on ‘House’) and a bevy of bunnies and chicks who run the colorful factory where candy is made and assembled into Easter baskets.

E.B. is about to be crowned the Easter Bunny, taking over the role from his dad, but the young bunny is more interested in playing his drums. So he heads off to Hollywood seeking fame and fortune, only to be nearly run over by a car (don’t worry – he’s fine) driven by Fred (James Marsden), a slacker who still lives with his parents (Gary Cole and Elizabeth Perkins).

Fred finally agrees to go on a job interview arranged by his more-successful sister (Kaley Cuoco), who also sets him up with a house-sitting gig at her boss’s posh mansion. After Fred recovers from the shock of nearly running down a talking bunny, he invites him to stay at the mansion. And thus begins their parallel storyline, with both E.B. and Fred trying to find their path in life.

Even though ‘Hop’ has the same computer-animated appearance as other modern-day family movies (it’s from the creators of ‘Despicable Me’), the story is creative, unique and, well, really colorful. I’m not usually one for crude humor, but even E.B. pooping out jelly beans is pretty cute, and the casting of Russell Brand is nothing short of brilliant. He’s exactly how I’d envision an Easter Bunny to sound.

If you’re looking for an entertaining family film that appeals to all ages, I highly recommend ‘Hop.’ It’s not only really cute, but it also has some good messages about fulfilling your responsibilities while still pursuing your own dreams. And thank goodness it’s not in 3D!
