Think you need a famous relative or agent to get into the acting business? Tyler James Williams proves that theory wrong.
The 14-year-old star of Everybody Hates Chrisand Unaccompanied Minors got started in acting through ads his mom found in the entertainment section of the local paper. “Then I got a manager and started going on more auditions,” he notes.
Williams’ early acting jobs included the voice of Bobby in Little Bill, the animated series created by Bill Cosby. He also starred as a series regular for several years on Sesame Street. “What I remember most about working on Sesame Street is having fun in the green room with the other kids, while waiting for my time to go on camera to work with the puppets.”
In Unaccompanied Minors, he plays Charlie Goldfinch, a quirky, home-schooled kid who’s very bright and optimistic about life. “He’s friendly and outgoing, but not very good at sports,” he explains. “He gets stuck with four other kids at an airport, and they all try to create a special Christmas for themselves.”
The one similarity he shares with Charlie: “We both dance to our own drummer!” The one difference is that Williams loves basketball, especially the Miami Heat.
In Everybody Hates Chris, a television series created by comedian Chris Rock. Williams plays a young Chris, a resilient kid struggling to keep his siblings in line while facing a new neighborhood and school.
While he doesn’t work closely with Chris Rock, Williams says he’s very cool and down to earth. And so is it overwhelming playing a comedy icon? “No, because most viewers didn’t know Chris as a kid,” he says. “It’s just a lot of fun.”
Williams loves acting because he gets to meet lots of new people, and “play different types of personalities without being considered crazy.”
Williams has been nominated for several awards, including a 2006 Young Artist Award as Best Performance in a TV Series (comedy or drama) – Leading Young Actor for Everybody Hates Chris. He lives in New York with his parents, brothers Tylen and Tyrel, and their Silky Terrier, “Benny ‘Ruff-Neck’ Williams”.
