Is ABC Right to Ban the Trailer for Our Idiot Brother?

Paul Rudd in Our Idiot Brother

You look more cute than idiotic, Paul | TWC

Just heard that ABC has banned the TV spot for The Weinstein Company’s film Our Idiot Brother, opening in theaters tomorrow. The move prompted The Weinstein Company to cut a new red band trailer for the film — which contains considerably more language and crudity than the banned trailer.

Which, of course, prompted Weinstein’s co-chair Harvey Weinstein to say, “We’d like to dedicate our new red band trailer for Our Idiot Brother to censorship everywhere. Enjoy!” Oh, that Harvey loves to taunt. I’d love to be his lawyer. Ok, I take that back. I’d love to make the money his lawyer makes.

Anyway, here’s the banned trailer below. Honestly, it doesn’t seem that bad to me. Look, it’s an R-rated movie called Our Idiot Brother starring Paul Rudd and distributed by The Weinstein Company. We’re not talking Disney princess here. I won’t include the red band trailer because this is a family site, but you can check it out over at the Moviefone Wasteland (Warning, Will Robinson! Foul language ahead!).

The ensemble comedy, which follows three sisters and their incurably optimistic sibling, was a breakout hit at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. It’s directed by Jesse Peretz and also stars Elizabeth Banks, Zooey Deschanel, Emily Mortimer, Steve Coogan, Hugh Dancy, Kathryn Hahn, Rashida Jones, Shirley Knight, T.J. Miller and Adam Scott.

Sure it’s a little raw, but does this trailer seem ban-worthy to you?

Oh, you should see some of the crap coming up in the Fall 2011 shows! Will write up a post in the next day or so warning everyone to flee from their TVs in terror (except for a few noteworthy shows like Terra Nova and Alcatraz and Grimm).

No, no, no. I don’t think I’ll go see this movie. It looks really stupid. I know we’re only talking about a trailer here, but I’m always reminded of a comment Spanish actress Victoria Abril made about the sex in her movies, that she could not understand why they were banned in the USA, when movies about violence were shown without the censors thinking twice.

Hmmm. Not sure if I’d see this one, although I have heard some positive buzz about it.

It doesn’t seem too bad. I like it better than those new vibrator commercials. I really don’t like explaining to my young sons why that woman’s hair is blown back.

Oh no kidding. Or the E.D. ads for guys. Geesh…

Oh yeah, the ED commercials. My sons are probably wondering “why are those people taking a bath in the middle of a field?” I still wonder why that seems to be an iconic symbol of love. Bathing in a pollen and mosquito filled outdoor venue does not seem romantic to me.
