I loved the original ‘Pirates’ movie — 2003′s ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl’ — but have to say that each new installment has been a little lesser movie for me. I have high hopes for the fourth one, though — ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,’ which arrives in theaters May 20, 2011.
It probably has more to do with me missing Johnny Depp as Capt. Jack Sparrow than anything. This one finds Jack crossing paths with the beautiful Angelica (Penelope Cruz), but is she just a ruthless con artist who’s using him to find the fabled Fountain of Youth?
It seems likely when she forces him aboard the “Queen Anne’s Revenge,” the ship of the legendary pirate Blackbeard (Ian McShane). The cast includes franchise vets Geoffrey Rush as the vengeful Captain Hector Barbossa and Kevin R. McNally as Captain Jack’s longtime comrade Joshamee Gibbs, plus Sam Claflin as a stalwart missionary and Astrid Berges-Frisbey as a mysterious mermaid.
The trailer looks fun and colorful. We’re missing Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley, but we have the aforementioned Penelope Cruz, along with the mermaid and a few zombies. It’s not rated yet, but I’m guessing it’ll be PG-13. Directed by Rob Marshall; 141 minutes; in 2D, 3D and IMAX 3D.

Never gave it much thought until right now, but I think I’m happy with the exchange of Keira for Penelope. Orlando never did anything for me anyway…
